Day 1

Arrive in La Rochelle

Arrive into La Rochelle. This coastal city is the capital of the Charente-Maritime department and has been a key location for French trade and fishing for centuries. If time permits, explore the old town at your leisure with it’s half-timbered medieval houses and Renaissance architecture. Overnight in La Rochelle.

La Rochelle - Fort Boyard

Today take a guided tour of the harbour of La Rochelle and the famous town. You will visit the markets with local products from fresh seafood to locally made leather goods. Join a boat trip to see the legendary Fort Boyard. The idea for famous fort first came about in the 17th century and was finally completed in 1857 after various set backs. There is also the option to visit the bunker museum, the intact headquarters of U-boat officers during World War II. Overnight in La Rochelle.

Explore Île de Ré

Spend the day at Île de Ré and visit the coastal village of Ars-en-Re, known as one of the most picturesque villages in France. It is dotted with white houses, cobbled streets and an abundance of colourful flowers. There are also options to visit La Ferme des Baleines or go wine tasting at La Cave des Vignerons de l’ile de Ré or visit a local chocolate factory. Overnight in La Rochelle.

Visit Île d’Oleron

Spend the day at Île d’Oleron where you will see the Chassiron lighthouse which offers stunning views of the coastline, Antioche lighthouse and Fort Boyard. Visit the Port des Salines and the Grand Village Plage which is made up of oyster huts. This site presents the history of salt and salt workers through guided tours in the heart of an active salt marsh. Oyster tasting in Marennes or a sensational eglade - mussels cooked under pine needles. Overnight in La Rochelle.

Cognac - Blaye

Immerse yourself in Cognac, the city and the eau-de-vie with a tasting. Alternatively, take a guided tour of UNESCO World Heritage Site, citadel of Blaye. Wine taste at the Maison du Vin in Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux. From Blaye follow the “route de la corniche” along the Gironde, discovering villages with troglodyte houses and fishermen’s huts on the banks of the Gironde as far as Bourg. Tasting or lunch at the Maison des Côtes de Bourg and its wine bar. Overnight in the Bordeaux area.

Bordeaux

Visit the UNESCO city of Bordeaux, historic regional capital, gateway to the vineyards and home to the wine museum, La Cité du Vin. Then head to Arcachon a seaside resort town known for oyster harvesting and nearby Dune du Pilat, a famous 110m high sand dune. Travel towards Toulouse via one of the wine routes around Bordeaux such as Médoc, Saint-Emilion, Graves or Sauternes to taste both white and red wine where the latter is in the direction of Toulouse. Overnight in Toulouse area.

Toulouse - Carcassone

Head south towards the coast via the medieval city of Carcassone. The city is perched on a hill overlooking the Aude river and has 52 towers and 3km of ramparts. Continue to Sète, a Mediterranean port city well known for it’s canals, white sandy beaches and saltwater lagoon. Enjoy a traditional snack of “Tielle Setoise” by the canal. Finish your day in Marseille with a city tour. Overnight in the Marseille area.

Marseille - Cassis

Visit the spectacular Calanques de Marseille, a natural wonder between Marseille and Cassis. Best appreciated on the water this national park offers dramatic landscapes, crystal clear seas, and immense biodiversity. Continue east to the fashionable city of Cannes for a tour where you will see the famous locations of the annual film festival. Overnight in the Nice area.

Villefranche-sur-Mer - Nice

Begin your last day with a Nice city tour.
